And that’s a leading cause for weight gain, said Chris Mohr, Ph.D., R.D.

Dr. Mohr shared his best strategies for how you can transform into a more mindful eater, take a look at his easy tips below. Don’t be surprised as how quickly they’ll become a daily part of your life.

Set A Timer

Whenever you’re planning to eat, make sure you set a timer for 20 minutes. The reason? By taking the ~entire~ 20 minutes to eat your meal, you are allowing your mind and body to focus on each individual bite so that you don’t scarf it all down in minutes.

Eat With Your Non-Dominant Hand

Try to eat with your non-dominant hand. We know that this will feel totally un-natural, but it’ll force you to slow down and be much more conscious about your food.

Eat Silently

Now this one might be tough for some folks! Eat silently for five minutes. While you’re doing so, think about what it actually took to produce that dish. Everything from the farmer who grew the food, to buying it at the store, and also cooking the meal.

Take Small Bites

When you take small bites of your food, you’re also thoroughly chewing your food before even reaching another forkful. This is also a helpful weight loss tip, small bites and small portion sizes.

Before Heading to the Kitchen, Ask Yourself This Question

While this might sound odd, give it a try before you knock it. Before you open the fridge or cabinet, simply take a breath and ask yourself this question, “Am I really hungry?” You can also do a short activity first as well. Such as reading, drinking water, or taking a short walk. Any of there will help you determine the real answer to the question.
